Knotty Alder Built-Ins That Look Like They Were Always There

A lot of homeowners want more storage but don't want their space to feel like a storage unit. That's the challenge with most off-the-shelf shelving - it solves one problem and creates another. Built-ins done right should feel like part of the home, not an addition to it.

That's exactly what we were going for here. We built, stained, and finished this entire unit in knotty alder to match the existing kitchen cabinets. The goal was simple - make it feel like it was always part of the house. The grain, the stain tone, the finish - all dialed in to tie everything together seamlessly.

The upper section gives you a full wall of open shelving with adjustable shelf pins, so it works for books, decor, or whatever you're storing. The lower cabinets with the matte black hardware close it all off cleanly and give you hidden storage that keeps the room looking sharp. It's a smart layout because it works two ways - display and conceal.

Knotty alder is one of our favorite wood species to work with for built-ins. It has real character - the knots and grain variation give it warmth that painted MDF just can't replicate. And when you stain it to match existing cabinetry, the result is a cohesive, custom look throughout the whole space.
